GILBERT, AZ (CBS5)A Valley businessman died in a plane crash Saturday during a humanitarian mission in Sinaloa, Mexico.

John Slater, 51, volunteered to fly for the organization known as the, Flying Doctors of Mercy for their most recent flight that left Friday, according to a board member with the nonprofit, Pat Spier.

Spier said just after the 50-year-old took off, that the plane went down, killing Slater and injuring everyone else onboard.

“Right after he took off, I don’t know how long he was in the air, and then he crashed,” she said.

Spier said Slater was flying from El Fuerte to another small village and that the flight was expected to be approximately 15 minutes long.

Pat Spier said Slater will be greatly missed inside their organization.

“He was a very nice man. A very nice man and I understand an experienced and very good pilot,” she said.

There were three other volunteers on the plane who survived, they are teenagers from California.
